Even as an adult I find it difficult to sleep on Christmas Eve. Yuletide excitement is a potent caffeine, no matter your age.

This is the year we began to establish all of the Christmas traditions that will become such an important part of Liam Eliot’s world.
I remember so vividly the rituals we participated in as a family around the holidays; how important they became to me, how I looked forward to every small thing and how disappointed I felt if anything was going to be different.
When I was growing up, we never lived close to extended family so our traditions generally included only my immediate family. Our holidays were quiet, simple events and my brother and I came to treasure that.
Ryan, on the other hand, was raised around gobs of extended family. His holidays were filled with the bustling family gatherings one generally expects and I know he treasured that as well.
Liam Eliot, lucky little boy that he is, will experience a bit of everything around the holidays.. and I know that he will hold this time close to his heart as he grows. It is so interesting to be on the other side of things: establishing the traditions rather than simply participating in them; being such a central character in another person’s life and memories.
We have decided to have our family Christmas on the morning of Christmas Eve.
We opened presents and then Mama and Papa made breakfast together while Liam enjoyed his new xylophone. We spent the afternoon lounging around in our pajamas, watching movies, napping and relaxing.
It was the perfect start to our holiday weekend.
